So, the RT Default does have some adjustments. But the RAW itself would be as you set i.e. I guess it must take the settings into account somehow. It means that RAW Therapee default is actually attempting to compensate for the measured underexposure. So the algorithm has taken into account the overall image and attempted to lighten. Yes, looking at the exposure tab, the 'exposure' and 'lighten' sliders have gone very positive. Now look at how Rawtharepee processed the one image, it removed the -2.5 stop exposure compensation: Please see the following, these are the exposures as I took the pictures, all were about - 2.5 stops: I do have an observation though, you said that the RAW files inherently have less pop and contrast, that I understand, but do you also think that the exposure is affected also. Very interesting, thank you for your response. When you create your own'great' profile settings, you can save as I noted above and then bring to this preferences so all open at that, until then, one of the Bundled profiles should work.
Have not tried yet, but should work for opening new images. Then click okay on bottom right and close preferences. To set the default processing profile, go to preferences icon on bottom left, then > Image processing > Default processing profile> for RAW photos> change to what you want, for example> Bundled profiles > Generic> Punchy 1

I will check to see (I never tried as it is not my main RAW converter), how to change the default profile later (so you don't have to do the copy and paste thing) and get back to you.īut it is good to know the processing settings copy and paste, in case you want to copy from one image to another, in any case. You can then click on each image and apply other changes as you wish. That then gives you your new default starting point for all the images. Right click on one of the selected new images to process and go to Processing Profile Operations -Paste Then, holding down CTRL button (on a Windows, not sure about MAC) click on rest of images to highlight them, then let go of CTRL Go o image in top bar, right click and go to 'Processing profile operations (has a pretty icon next to it)'copy' Now you have the start to work with, BUT, you can apply that to ALL the images before working, as follows: This is not a bad thing, because RAW is giving you all of the data to work with.ġ When you open images from a shoot (bearing mind you open with RAW Therapee and don't import with specific settings as you would with Lightroom and Capture One etc, thus the processing now needs to be done), go to the first image, adjust that to a profile other than Default, for example Profile / Bundled profiles / Generic / Punchy 1 and apply that to the image by changing drop down box to that. So, when you change the profile of the imported image to something more punchy, that is now somewhat processed, but more pleasing to the eye. RAW will come as a much flatter look and include ALL data, thus giving a very different file. The back LCD of your camera is displaying a JPEG iteration of the image, even if your are shooting RAW. Just in case you are thinking that the RAW should look like the back LCD of the camera on playback, this is not so. When you see other converters import with a more contrasty and punchy look, closer to your back JCD of the camera, that already is being imported with some processing adjustments on import. The thing is, RAW *is* going to be rather flat. Yes, the first screen above reflects the 'default' profile. bear in mind I am no expert, but there are my thoughts/ opinions.

Is there a way for Rawtherapee to not do anything to the picture and allow me to make modifications as all other RAW editing software does? IMHO, the software has promise, but the person who developed Neutral and Default may want to rethink the concept of Neutral. Is there a way to reset everything? I could then make this my Default profile. I then tried to find out what setting was causing the pictures to look like this, and I could not find it. That's what both neutral and default do to my pictures. If you can, look at the first horizontal picture on the first screen you posted, it looks kind of washed out and lacking any contrast.
Scenes shot in broad sunlight became washed out and lacked contrast and scene of a spotlit musician on a black stage became a mass of 18% grey. Yes I was selecting either Neutral or Default but the results were striking.
